A short yet revealing article was published in the New York Times last week stating that a group of advisers to the Food and Drug Administration voted unanimously for the F.D.A. to change its “so-called risk-management programs for opioid painkillers.”

Recently there has been considerable national focus on abuse of these highly addictive medications. Although the group of advisers referenced by The Times agree it would be a challenge, they  believe there should be a requirement for doctors to undergo training focused toward reducing abuse of opioids. The F.D.A. is not required to follow this advice, but they frequently do follow these advisers’ suggestions. In the wake of the opioid crisis in the United States, this is yet another step in the direction of prevention.
