What is an Independent Medical Exam (IME)?
An Independent Medical Exam (IME) is an evaluation by a physician who has never treated the claimant, used to get an unbiased medical opinion on a workers’ comp, auto, or disability claim. IMEs help claims professionals evaluate the status of a claim and develop a strategy in a timely, cost-effective way, clarifying causation, treatment needs, maximum medical improvement, and impairment. MCN, which created the first national network of independent medical providers in 1997, coordinates IMEs with board-certified specialists across 150+ specialties in all 50 states, including clinic locations in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska.
What is a Peer Review?
A peer review is a records-only evaluation: an independent physician reviews the claimant’s current medical records, without an in-person exam, and gives an evidence-based opinion on the case. MCN’s peer reviews assess causality, return to work, restrictions, limitations, and level of impairment, helping claims professionals make treatment and authorization decisions without scheduling an exam.
What is a Functional Capacity Exam (FCE)?
A Functional Capacity Exam (FCE) is a series of physical tests that shows what a person can safely do on the job, such as lifting, carrying, standing, and reaching. MCN uses FCE results to recommend whether a patient can return to work, and whether that return needs restrictions or accommodations.
What is an Independent Review Organization (IRO)?
An Independent Review Organization (IRO) is a neutral, third-party entity that conducts evidence-based medical reviews to support fair and objective healthcare coverage decisions. IROs evaluate cases involving medical necessity, experimental or investigational treatments, and plan policy interpretation, providing unbiased clinical determinations that align with federal, state, and accreditation standards. At MCN, our URAC-accredited IRO delivers specialty-matched, independent reviews performed by board-certified physicians in active practice. These reviews support utilization management processes, appeals, and legally mandated external reviews, ensuring decisions are clinically sound, compliant, and free from conflicts of interest.
