In his recently published paper, Nick Haslam, a professor of psychology at the University of Melbourne, explains how “concept creep” in the field of psychology has reshaped many aspects of modern society. The following article in The Atlantic discusses the paper entitled “Concept Creep: Psychology’s Expanding Concepts of Harm and Pathology” in which Mr. Haslam argues that concepts such as abuse, bullying, trauma, mental disorder, addiction and prejudice all have expanded meanings that reflect “an ever-increasing sensitivity to harm.” It is these expansions of meaning that he calls “concept creep.” Using two stories, the article illustrates how concept creep can have some positive implications but also have potentially damaging ramifications in American culture.
